Individuals who provide services independently – that is, not as an employee of an organization – are said to be in 'private practice'. These professionals have elected to take an entrepreneurial approach to their careers, establishing a business structure – a proprietorship, partnership or corporation – through which they offer services directly to the public or to other organizations.
Association members in private practice are held to the same standards as any other Technology Professionals and are bound by the same Code of Ethics. Most importantly, they must put the public interest ahead of any personal and business interests.
Several ethics-related issues have already been noted in the Profession part of this manual but are repeated here. Members in private practice must:
- Only accept work for which they are qualified and competent or they must secure further professional advice and assistance.
- Employ written contracts to define the scope of work to be performed and the obligations of all parties.
- Identify and avoid conflicts of interest.
- Keep client information confidential.
- Ensure that when bidding for services, the proposed terms reflect fair payment for fair value.
- Represent their services, abilities and qualifications accurately and fairly when advertising.
- When using a professional stamp, use stamp guidelines and ensure that stamp use adheres to the Code of Ethics.
- Know and comply with the laws, regulations and bylaws that apply to their business and areas of professional activity.
- Know and follow the Code of Ethics.
